Bapu | |
Born | Sattiraju Lakshminarayana December 15, 1933 ![]() |
Sattiraju Lakshmi Narayana, also known as Bapu (born on December 15, 1933) is a filmmaker in the Telugu film industry. He is also a popular artist, painter,
Early life and background
Bapu was born to a Telugu Brahmin family in Narsapur, West Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, India.[1]
In 1955, he graduated from the University of Madras with a degree in law. Bapu worked as a political cartoonist for the newspaper Andhra Patrika in 1955.
[edit]Career
[edit]Painting
Bapu introduced a painting style of simple bright colors. His unique style consisted of economy of strokes, freehand drawing and a lack of background clutter.
His paintings focus on Hindu mythological characters, and he has painted the Hindu epic Ramayana as a pictorial story. His character portrayals, such as Shiva, Bhima, Duryodhana, look distinctly male with wide chests, large jaws and large biceps; while Krishna and Rama are more feminine in build. All his female characters have doe eyes, a waist-hip ratio of 0.7, voluptuous breasts, long hair and a sharp nose. The phraseBapu Bomma ("Bapu's painting") has become synonymous with a beautiful Telugu girl. Another character called Rendu Jadala Seetha ("Seetha with two plaits") became a synonym for any girl wearing her hair in two plaits.
Bapu has also introduced a new style of cursive writing in Telugu. The font is his own handwriting and reflects the same simplicity as his art.
[edit]Cinematic style
The most notable achievement in Bapu's movie making is his success in capturing the nativity of the Telugu people and translating it into visuals. His movies center on realistic family issues and relationships, however his recurring theme is magic realism, with vignettes of mythological characters aiding in the narration.
Most of his movies have a female protagonist; a breakaway style from the formulaic movies that relegate female lead characters to song and dance numbers. His penchant for preserving the Telugu nativity in his movies can be seen in the choice of artists, especially the dusky female leads and weak villains.
[edit]Collaborations with other artists
He worked with Satyam Sankaramanchi and drew 101 pictures for each of the stories in Amaravati Kathalu. Bapu is one-half of the Bapu-Ramana (Mullapudi Venkata Ramana) pair that made movies in Telugu cinema. Ramana provided an able foil, providing script and dialogue to suit Bapu's visuals. Bapu collaborated with Ramana to give life to Ramana's character Budugu in the form of pictures. Through his movies he brought to focus renowned artists such as Ravu Gopal Rao, Rajendra Prasad and Aamani.
[edit]Trivia
Bapu designed the collection of saris used in the 1991 movie Pelli Pustakam.

In August 2007, a music video for the song "Kalluri Vaanil" from the Indian-Tamil movie Pennin Manathai Thottu was uploaded to YouTube by Mike Sutton (Youtuber Buffalax).[6] The video was created as a soramimi, edited to include incorrect English subtitles that approximate the original Tamil lyrics phonetically.
The name Benny Lava comes from Sutton's subtitling of the Tamil lead line "Kalluri vaanil kaayndha nilaavo?" as "My loony bun is fine, Benny Lava!" (original meaning: The moon (metaphor for 'babe') that scorched the college campus"). The video led other Youtube users to refer to Prabhu Deva as "Benny Lava". The video was inspired after Sutton watched Moskau by German pop-band Dschinghis Khan.[6] One of Sutton's friends "wished he could understand the song so he could sing along."[6] Sutton thought the real translation would be difficult and instead used English lyrics that replicated the German song.[6] Reception to the video was mixed; Some felt that the video was done in "good fun" while others worried that their culture was being mocked.[6] The video was described by the Philippine Daily Inquirer as a "Catchy melody, a battalion of back-up dancers, colorful costumes, impressive vocal gymnastics, jaw-dropping choreography this music video has it all. And if those arent enough, the person who uploaded this vid also provided subtitles so you can sing along. They arent the real lyrics though, but just what they sound in English, resulting in a lot of nonsense. - [sic]- "[7] The music video was also featured on The Colbert Reporton 4 December 2008.

Sekhar was schooled at St. Patrick's High School, Secunderabad. He completed his intermediate studies from St. Alphonsa's and graduated with a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology affiliated to Osmania University, Hyderabad. He later went to the United States of America to pursue a Graduate degree in Computer Sciences at New Jersey. After a brief stint in the IT industry, he enrolled in the MFA program at Howard University, Washington, D.C.
[edit]Career
Sekhar 's first film was the so called "commercial formulas" in making his movies. Nevertheless, all his movies have been very well received and have been commercially successful at the box-office, making him one of the revolutionary directors of Telugu cinema. Dollar Dreams[1]. This film was a critical success, and won him the National Film Award for best debutant director. His second film, Anand, was huge hit in the year 2004. Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, a prominent person in the Telugu film industry, declared Sekhar as "Hero of 2004". His next film, Godavari, was praised by critics, but was a moderate success. He has done his magic again with Happy Days last year (2007). Happy Days which was released in USA on 28th Sept was declared a smash hit. Kammula's films pleasantly lack the omnipresent violence in Indian cinema and this makes family viewing possible. He avoids over dramatization, vulgarity and violence. He worked with Polaris before starting films, his brother is still associated with same firm.

A karunakaran official website is www.aKarunakaran.com[1]
[edit]Career
Karunakaran's first directorial film was Tholi Prema was a sensational hit. That film enhanced Pawan Kalyan's image as an actor. His subsequent films Yuvakudu, Vasu, and Balu ABCDEFG disappointed at box office. Though they failed at box office, the way he presents the movie is superb. His next film Happy was a moderate success. In his films heroines are given importance and are not shown in vulgar manner unlike many directors. This is really appreciated by Class Audience. He gives much importance to his story & screenplay rather than skin-show. His first movie Tholi Prema is a master piece.[citation needed] Tholi Prema,Yuvakudu, (somewhat)Vasu, and Happy are the examples for the decency he follows. He is now back with his hit movie "Ullasamga Utsahamga" in which nobody can stop ur laughter.
